Yorkshire Dales
17th - 19th May 2008
The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way is a glorious 130 mile circular route around the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Starting and finishing in the market town of Skipton, the route passes through some of the most beautiful countryside in England. Mostly following quiet minor roads, there are some spectacular views with scenery ranging from bleak moors to green valleys.
The stunning scenery is complemented by some villages and market towns that have scarcely changed over the past two hundred years.
Itinerary
Day 1) Saturday 17th May
Skipton is known as The Gateway to the Dales. Leaving Skipton with its Norman Castle, we soon start climbing before dropping down to Barden Towers, which dates back to the twelfth century and overlooks the River Wharfe. We cycle up the Wharfe Valley following the river before crossing over to Malham for lunch. The spectacular limestone amphitheatre of Malham Cove is a five minute walk and well worth visiting.
Leaving Malham there is a short sharp climb up to Malham Cove. This is the high point of the day at around 1300 feet. We cross Fountains Fell before dropping down to the River Ribble and following the valley down to Settle, another market town and the start of the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway. We then meander through more gently rolling countryside until we get to the village of Ingleton, our first nights stop.
Distance approx 45 miles:
Day 2) Sunday 18th
We leave and immediately start climbing up the beautiful and desolated Kingsdale before dropping very steeply into Dentdale and the historic village of Dent with its cobbled streets. We follow the meandering River Dee before passing Dent Head Viaduct, climbing again before dropping down for lunch in Hawes, the home of Wensleydale Cheese and the Dales Countryside Museum.
Hawes is on the River Ure, and we follow this for a while before turning off north for the last climb of the day, ascending to almost 500 metres (the highest point on the tour) before again descending into Swaledale. The rest of the day is thankfully flat as we follow the River Swale to our second nights stop in Reeth.
Distance approx 42 miles:
Day 3) Monday 19th
We start heading south, and (once again) start with a climb up to Harkerside Moor. Passing close to the 14th Century Castle Bolton we soon start climbing again. This time it’s Coverdale, the last great climb of the trip, and one of the most beautiful. We drop steeply into Kettlewell for lunch, before rejoining the River Wharfe and winding our way back to Skipton, this time via the ruins of the 12th Century Bolton Abbey.
Distance approx 46 miles:
